Maharashtra : Stan Swamy, accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, died today, hearing on the bail plea

Veteran tribal rights activist Father Stan Swamy passed away here this afternoon. He was awaiting bail on medical grounds. Swamy’s senior advocate Mihir Desai briefed the Bombay High Court judges Justice SS Shinde and Justice NJ Jamdar about the developments when his bail plea came up for hearing this afternoon. A doctor treating him informed the court, “It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that Father Stan Swamy has passed away. He said the 84-year-old worker had suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be saved. It is said that Stan Swamy was the oldest person in India to be accused of terrorism. He was arrested in October last year in connection with the violence that broke out in Bhima Koregaon in January 2018. Stan Swamy was arrested by the National Investigative Agency, which investigates terrorist incidents. The NIA had also accused him of having links with Maoists, as well as several sections of the UAPA were also imposed on him.
