West Bengal : Over 80 Trinamool workers and leaders arrested in Tripura

Over 80 Trinamool leaders and workers, including Trinamool Congress (TMC) Tripura unit president Ashish Lal Singha, were arrested from different parts of Tripura, who united to listen to the party supremo’s virtual address on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day. In 1993, Trinamool workers gathered in large numbers at Gaurnagar in Unokoti district of North Tripura to pay tribute to the 13 martyrs killed in police firing at a Youth Congress rally led by then Congress leader Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata.

Though the party observes 21 July as Martyrs Day every year to remember 13 martyrs in West Bengal, it observed this day for the first time in various states of the country including BJP-ruled Tripura.

However, Singha claimed that the police arrested him despite Covid restrictions and maintaining protocol. In Kolkata, Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Banerjee claimed that her party workers were not allowed to celebrate Martyrs’ Day by the BJP government in Tripura.
