South Africa captain Bavuma reprimanded for breaching ICC’s code of conduct
South Africa cricket team captain Temba Bavuma has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first T20 match against Ireland in Malahide on Monday. The ICC has confirmed this.
According to a statement issued by the ICC, Bavuma has been found to have violated Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and their Support Staff, which deals with the use of abusive language during an international match.
Along with the reprimand, a demerit point has been added to Bavuma’s disciplinary record. This is Bavuma’s first offense in a span of 24 months.
It is noteworthy that the incident happened in the sixth over of South Africa’s innings against Ireland on Monday, when Bavuma used abusive language after being caught by the wicketkeeper.
Bavuma has accepted the offense and accepted the sentence proposed by Kevin Gallagher of the ICC’s International Match Referees Panel and sanctioned by the ICC Cricket Operations Department in accordance with the Corona Interim Sports Rules, so there was no need for a formal hearing in the matter.
On-field umpires Alan Neal and Mark Hawthorne, third umpire Roland Black and fourth official Paul Reynolds accused Bavuma of the violation. It is noteworthy that violations of Level 1 carry at least an official reprimand, a fine of 50 per cent of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points.
