Noida Police on Sunday arrested an 80-year-old man for allegedly ‘digital rape’ with a 17-year-old girl for seven years. The man, identified as Maurice Ryder, was also charged with indecent acts with the victim.
Case registered under section 376 of IPC and POCSO Act
Based on the complaint of the minor, the police registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 5 and 6 of the POCSO Act. According to the information, the accused used to beat up the victim for opposing it. A police officer said that the matter is being investigated.
What is digital rape?
If a man pierces her private parts with his fingers or thumb without the consent of the woman, then it is called digital rape. The term digital rape is being used a lot in foreign countries. In India also a law has been made for this. Actually, finger, thumb, toe are also addressed with digit in the English dictionary. That’s why such an act has been named digital rape.
Got legal status after Nirbhaya case
Let us inform that after the Nirbhaya incident in the year 2012 in India, changes were made in the rape laws. Digital rape was also included in these changes. Digital rape was also added in section 376 of IPC to reduce the offenses of rape. But still the use and punishment of the word digital rape in the country is very less.
In 70% of the cases, the close are the accused
According to media reports, in 70% of digital rape cases, the accused are close people or relatives of the victim. This includes cousins, close friends, other relatives, neighbors and in some cases their own father. In 29% of the cases, the perpetrator was someone whom the victim knew through her social circle. Someone whom she knows through her friends. Or someone whom she is meeting for the first time through a date. You will be surprised to know that only 1% of the cases are registered in which the perpetrator was a stranger.
Punishment for so many years
Very few crimes are registered in digital rape cases. The biggest reason behind this is that most people are not aware of this word. In view of this, it has also been included in the laws of rape. After this, there is a provision of punishment for the accused in such cases. In digital rape cases, the offender can be jailed for at least 5 years. At the same time, in some cases, the offender may have to undergo a sentence of 10 years or life imprisonment.
