The country got the first steel road

A steel road has been built in Surat, Gujarat. This is the first time such an experiment has been done in the country. This road has been built in Hazira Industrial Area. By the way, after reading this, you must be feeling that the entire road is made of steel and a sheet of steel would have been laid to make it, so it is not so at all. Actually, it is made from the waste generated from steel plants across the country. According to statistics, about 19 million tonnes of steel waste is generated every year from different steel plants in the country. The situation has become such that there have been many piles like mountains of steel waste.

First such experiment

So this new experiment has been started. After many researches, a 6-loan road has been built on an experimental basis in Gujarat from steel waste. At present, only one kilometer long road has been made from steel waste. It is expected that if all goes well, steel waste will be used to build highways and roads in the country in future. This will not only speed up the development work, but also get rid of steel waste. It has been prepared with the assistance of Ministry of Steel and NITI Aayog including Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Central Road Research Institute (CRRI). This project is also associated with the Government of India’s Waste to Wealth and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

How is a road made of steel waste?

In order to make a road from steel waste, first the ballast was made from steel waste after a long process. After this it was used to make roads. The thickness of the road built as per CSIR has also been reduced by 30 percent. It is expected that the road made with the technology of steak waste will be more robust and the chances of it getting damaged in the monsoon season will be very less.

CRRI Principal Scientist Satish Pandey said, “The one kilometer long road at Hazira Port was in very bad condition earlier due to heavy trucks. After this, the government used steel waste to repair the road as part of the experiment. Now every day more than 1000 trucks carrying a weight of 18 to 30 tonnes pass through it but there has been no change in any way. According to Satish Pandey, after this experiment, now the highways and other roads of the country can be made from steel waste because the roads made from it are very strong and durable. Steel plants across India generate 19 million tonnes of steel waste every year and it is estimated to increase to 50 million tonnes by 2030.
