In Maharashtra, it has been decided to cut the price of petrol by Rs 5 per liter. Apart from this, the price of diesel will also be reduced by Rs 3 a liter. CM Eknath Shinde announced this decision of his government in Mumbai on Thursday. Soon after becoming the CM, Eknath Shinde had announced a reduction in VAT on petrol and diesel, which has now been implemented. After the cabinet meeting today, Eknath Shinde along with Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis announced the decision in a media interaction.
He said that this decision will put a burden of Rs 6,000 crore on the exchequer of the Maharashtra government. He said that we have taken this decision so that common people can get relief. Shinde also said that the state government would take such decisions which would give relief to the people in future. Eknath Shinde said that in today’s meeting, the government has taken some decisions in public interest. We will continue to do justice to all sections of the society. We have started this in the first cabinet meeting. He said that today we have decided to reduce the tax on petrol and diesel.
The central government had reduced tax on fuel twice, on November 4, 2021 and May 22, 2022. Both the times the Center had said that the state government should also reduce the tax, but no decision was taken on this by the then Uddhav Thackeray government. Several BJP-ruled states including UP, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh had announced reduction in VAT on petrol and diesel during the same period. At the same time, the opposition states said that the central government had taken back the increase and no separate relief has been given to the common people.
