Singer Daler Mehndi arrested in pigeon pelting case, sent to jail by Patiala court

A Patiala court on Thursday dismissed his appeal against the two-year sentence awarded to Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi in the 2003 pigeon pelting case and upheld the sentence. After this, Mehndi, who appeared in the court, was arrested and sent to the Central Jail in Patiala.

There were allegations against Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh that after collecting huge amount from both the people, making them members of their group and sending them abroad illegally. In this case, in the year 2003, a case was registered against Daler Mehndi and other accused under various sections in the police station Sadar of Patiala.

After hearing for nearly 15 years, on March 16, 2018, the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Nidhi Saini, Patiala, convicted Mehndi of cheating and conspiracy and sentenced him to two years in prison. Along with this, the court also imposed a fine of two thousand rupees. While the other accused in this case, Bulbul Mehta, was acquitted. At the same time, the accused Shamsher Singh and Dhyan Singh had already died. However, due to the sentence being less than three years, Daler Mehndi got bail at the same time. He later filed an appeal against the sentence in the sessions court of Patiala.

On Thursday, the court of Additional Sessions Judge HS Grewal, Patiala, dismissed the appeal of Daler Mehndi and ordered to retain his two-year sentence. After this, Daler Mehndi was arrested and sent to Patiala Jail. Gurpreet Singh Bhasin, counsel for complainant Bakshish Singh, said that in this case of 2003, justice has now been received in the year 2022 after 19 years, which is very happy. It is worth noting that former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and former Akali cabinet minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia are already lodged in Patiala jail.
