US President Joe Biden held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping via video conferencing late on Thursday. During this both the leaders agreed to meet face-to-face. This will be the first personal meeting of the two leaders since Biden took over as the presidency. However, information has not been given about when and where the meeting will take place.
Jinping threatened Biden
According to the news agency ‘Reuters’, the Chinese President, angered by American interference in Taiwan, made a direct threat to Biden. Jinping said- I will only tell you that those who try to play with fire, they get burnt.
The direct meaning of this warning is that the bitterness between the two countries is increasing rapidly. China does not accept that the US and the Biden Administration should help Taiwan.
What is the reason for Jinping’s strife?
US Parliament Speaker Nancy Pelosi is believed to be visiting Taiwan next week. After 25 years, such a big leader of America is going on an official visit to Taiwan. This is a clear signal to China that America will no longer leave Taiwan alone and will help it at every level. China strongly disapproves of this. This is the reason why China has been threatening America of dire consequences for several days.
On the other hand, America has also made it clear that it will not step back under any circumstances. On May 23, Biden warned of taking military action against China. The bitterness of the relationship was also clearly visible in the Biden-Jinping meeting on Thursday.
It is being said that the US military has advised Nancy Pelosi not to go to Taiwan for the time being. The military believes that there is a war going on between Ukraine and Russia and in such a situation, if there is a conflict in Taiwan, then this matter can prove to be very dangerous.
Why the US and China are at loggerheads over Taiwan
China considers Taiwan its part under the One-China Policy, while Taiwan sees itself as an independent country. China’s goal has been to force Taiwan to bow to their political demands and accept China’s occupation.
Here, America also accepts the One China policy, but cannot see China’s occupation of Taiwan. Biden said 2 months ago – We agreed to the One China policy, we signed it, but it is wrong to think that Taiwan can be taken away by use of force. This move of China will not only be unfair, but it will destabilize the entire region.
US arms to Taiwan
On Wednesday, for the first time, all three wings of the Taiwan Military conducted war exercises. During this, only the strategy to deal with China was focused. Taiwan military tests missiles purchased from America. They were also seen mounted on warships and fighter jets. Apart from this, American drones were also used.
Talks for the second time after March
Biden and Jinping had a similar virtual meeting in March for two hours. Then there were talks on the war between Ukraine and Russia. He has held talks with Jinping five times since Biden came to power. However, both the leaders could not reach any conclusion on any issue including trade and Taiwan. However, the White House has not yet issued any official statement regarding Thursday’s talks. It is believed that there will be another conversation between the two leaders, but before that the Foreign Minister will meet.
