Uttar Pradesh / Lakhimpur Kheri : What do the family members of the girls, police and the family members of the accused say?

In a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur district where the bodies of two Dalit girls were found hanging from a tree in a sugarcane field, their families are trying to contain themselves amid a crowd of media persons, police and administration people and politicians.

When we reached his house, it was raining so hard that you could not get out of the house. The number of people was increasing under the roof of the house.

In such a situation, the mother of the girls was taking sobs in one corner of the house.

Lying on the cot, she started crying, “You have been snatched from my hands, the men dragged you away. Who will cook us food? Give us tea, daughter. You haven’t made tea till now…. Where is our doll? Gaya re. used to serve, now who will serve us. Where is the daughter of service?

She started hitting herself with both hands while crying and then fainted. A woman sitting next to him tried to shake him. She told me that ever since her mother got the news about the dead daughters, she had not eaten anything, was just crying.

People in the area are shocked by this incident. “Such an incident has never happened in the area,” said one person.

The police have arrested six people in this case. One Dalit and five Muslims are among those arrested. However, the local people told in the conversation that there has been no such situation of mutual dispute regarding religious issues here. But now there is an atmosphere of fear here due to the incident.

His son sitting nearby was watching the deteriorating condition of his mother. He got up and went to fetch water and then came and sat next to him.

Police officer SN Tiwari, who reached the house in the midst of rain shortly after, told the BBC that eight and a half lakh rupees have been transferred to the bank as financial help to the family. The total assistance amount is around Rs 50 lakh. Apart from this, efforts are also being made to help the family regarding housing and job.
