Government changes IT rules, new committees will be formed in three months for complaints of Facebook, Twitter users

Social media companies will no longer be able to arbitrarily in the name of regulation of content. The Government of India has prepared a blueprint for a new system for this. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Friday notified the laws related to Information Technology (IT) Amendment-2022 for complaints against Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. Its purpose is to provide a mechanism for the users to make complaints. If a user has been blocked or his content has been withheld, then he can approach the User Complaints Appellate Committee (GAC). The notification said that the Central Government shall constitute one or more Grievance Appellate Committees through notification within three months from the date of coming into force of the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Amendment Rules-2022. The committee will consist of a chairperson and two whole-time members appointed by the central government. There shall be one ex-officio member and two independent members.

Committee will work like this
- Users will be able to lodge complaints of any kind of misbehavior in the complaints committee. It is an important decision of the government to close the accounts of users, reduce and increase their followers, set up an appellate committee in view of the absurd advertisements.
- After complaining to the tech company official, a person dissatisfied with his decision can file a complaint within 30 days.
- These committees will finalize the complaints in 30 days.
- Tech companies will have to accept user complaints within 24 hours. They also have to be resolved expeditiously.
Compensation to the aggrieved users
Compensation will also be provided to the aggrieved users in the decision issued by the Complaints Appellate Committee. It will also be mandatory to implement the order immediately. The rules for social media companies came into effect from May 26, 2021.
