There is a lot of enthusiasm in the Olympic core group for team selection: Namita Toppo
Indian women’s hockey team midfielder Namita Toppo has said that there is a lot of excitement as well as some nervousness in the Olympic core group regarding the team selection. He told that keeping in mind the time of Tokyo, he is preparing for the Olympics. There is now less than 50 days left for the Tokyo Olympic Games to begin. There is a lot of enthusiasm among the members of the Indian Women’s Olympic Corps prospective group. The team is currently practicing inside the Bio-Bubble at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center here.
Toppo said that focusing on fitness is the most important thing. The weather in Tokyo is going to be very challenging and our practice sessions are planned according to the time there. We are also playing a lot of internal matches to get the momentum needed for the Olympic matches. There is less than 50 days left for the start of the game and there is a lot of enthusiasm in the team. We are not letting anything outside affect our enthusiasm.
Toppo, who played more than 160 matches for the Indian women’s hockey team, was a member of the Indian team that qualified for the Olympics after 36 years at the Rio Olympics 2016. 16 players of the team are yet to be selected for Tokyo 2020. To this, Toppo said that there is no dearth of talent in the team and many young players are making progress.
The Indian midfielder said, “Over the last three years a very talented group of young players have made it to the senior core group, who have done exceptionally well for the team on international tours. During this time he has also got experience of playing in big tournaments including Asian. In such a situation, it cannot be said for any player whether his place in the team is confirmed or not.
