Wrestler Sumit Malik fails dope test, may be out of Olympics
Commonwealth Games gold-winner and Tokyo Olympic-bound wrestler Sumit Malik has failed a dope test. Sumit had secured a quota for Tokyo in the 125kg freestyle category. This is the second time Sumit has failed in doping. Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), has confirmed this. He also said that Sumit was ill, so it could be that he has taken some medicine by mistake. United World Wrestling, the world body of wrestling, has temporarily suspended him.
He had earlier failed a dope test before the 2016 Rio Olympics. This time he failed the dope test in the recent qualifiers in Sofia. Vinod Tomar said on Friday that he has to give his B sample on June 10. If their B sample is also found positive then they will be banned.
According to the rules of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Sumit can challenge the suspension but by the time the trial starts and the verdict comes, the Olympics will be over.
