Punishment to former police officer in George Floyd’s murder case is justified
US President Joe Biden has justified the two-and-a-half-year prison sentence given to former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of black African American citizen George Floyd. Mr Biden said it appears to be justified from a legal point of view.
The US President has promised George Floyd’s family to pass a police reform bill in his name. The bill seeks to ban lethal force and make it easier to prosecute officers accused of misconduct.
It is noteworthy that a court in Hennepin County in the US has sentenced Derek Chauvin to 22 years and six months in prison for the custodial death of George Floyd last year. Floyd was arrested in April-2020 in connection with the murder of 45-year-old Chauvin. While being held in custody, the police officer held Floyd’s neck in his knee using third degree, which led to his death. There were nationwide demonstrations and riots in protest against the incident.
