Italy won the title by defeating England in the penalty shootout

Italy won the title of this tournament by defeating England in a penalty shootout in the final match of Euro 2020 played at Wembley Stadium here. Italy’s hero of victory was goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnaruma, who saved two goals in the penalty shootout and played a key role in Italy’s title win.

The match between Italy and England was tied 1-1 till extra time, after which the match was decided through a penalty shootout in which Italy won 3-2.

Earlier, England’s Luke Shaw scored in the second minute to give the team an early lead and started the title match brilliantly. England held the lead till the first half and managed to prevent Italy from scoring.

The way England took the lead in the first half, it seemed that England were close to ending their 55-year drought of winning titles in any major football tournament.

However, Italy bounced back in the second half as Leonardo Bonucci scored in the 67th minute to level the score 1-1.
After this, England and Italy tried their best to take the lead but both the teams could not score other goals even in the stipulated time and injury time and the match was tied at 1-1.

Donnarumma was adjudged Player of the Tournament. Italy has won a major international title for the first time since the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Italy last won the Euro Cup in 1968. Italy also reached the finals at Euro 2000 and Euro 2012, where they lost to France and Spain respectively.

On the other hand, England’s team, which last won the World Cup in 1966 by defeating Germany 4-2, their wait to win any major title after this has been extended by Italy.
