Careno Busta wins first ATP 500 title in Hamburg

Spain’s second seed Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-4 in the Hamburg European Open final to win his first ATP 500 trophy and sixth Tour-level title.

It’s an incredible feeling, said Careno Busta after winning the title last evening. I think I have worked very hard to win this title. This is my first ATP 500 title.

The Spaniard, ranked 13th in the world, did not miss a set in Hamburg. He performed brilliantly in the championship match, scoring 81 percent from his first serve and breaking Krajinovi’s serve three times.

Busta has now registered 17 clay-court victories this season. He lost to Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals at the Barcelona Open. He was then defeated by Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the Mallorca Championships. This is the first time he has won two clay-court titles in a single season. He has made a strong comeback this week after losing to Sam Cheere of the United States in the first round of Wimbledon last month.
Sixth seed Krajinovic, on the other hand, was competing in his fourth ATP Tour Finals on Sunday. He equaled his career-best win this week as he defeated world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas in the charter final.
