12 crew of cargo ship MV Kanchan, stranded off Gujarat coast, rescued

The Indian Coast Guard said that twelve Indian crew stranded on the cargo ship MV Kanchan at Umargam in Gujarat were told safe by another ship MV Hermes.

According to the Coast Guard, its Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Mumbai received information on the afternoon of July 21, 2021 that MV Kanchan was stranded at Umargam in Gujarat due to fuel contamination, resulting in engine failure and power supply to the ship. Not happening either.

The weather in the area was rough with winds up to 50 knots and sea waves reaching a height of 3-3.5 metres.

The Coast Guard said that later in the evening, the ship’s owner informed that MV Kanchan, which was carrying steel coils as cargo, dropped anchor and was deflecting towards starboard (right).

The MRCC then activated the international safety net to identify all nearby vessels to assist the stranded ship MV Kanchan.
In the vicinity, the MV Hermes reacted quickly and immediately headed towards the ship in distress.

Crossing the rough seas, MV Hermes rescued all 12 crew of MV Kanchan in a night operation on July 21, 2021. Also, ETV Water Lily has been deployed by the Directorate General of Shipping to assist the stranded ship.

In addition to this, two tugs have also been deployed by the ship’s owners, the Coast Guard said.
