BJP received Rs 2,555 crore from electoral bonds in the year 2019-20

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accounts for 76% of the electoral bonds sold in the financial year 2019-20. This has been revealed by the data obtained by NDTV from the Election Commission. Altogether, electoral bonds worth ₹3,355 crore were sold in the year 2019-20, taking the BJP’s income to ₹2,555 crore. This is 75 percent more than the previous year. Last year, the party had received Rs 1,450 crore through electoral bonds. On the other hand, the collection of BJP’s main political rival Congress declined by 17% in the same period. In the year 2018-19, the Congress got ₹ 383 crore from electoral bonds but in the year 2019-20 it got ₹ 318 crore – total 9 per cent of the electoral bonds were found.

Talking about other opposition parties, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress collected ₹ 100.46 crore. The amount was ₹ 29.25 crore for Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party, ₹ 41 crore for Shiv Sena, ₹ 45 crore for DMK, ₹ 2.5 crore for Lalu Yadav’s RJD and ₹ 18 crore for Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party. In the fiscal year ending March 2019, the BJP’s income was more than double the total amount of its five major rivals. However, even before the bond came, the party’s income was much higher than all other political parties.

Electoral bonds were introduced by the government in the year 2017-18.
