Police in Karnataka busted the Mysore gang rape case and arrested five accused on Saturday. Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra, who arrived to brief Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, said the operation to nab the culprits was successful and he would reveal the details by noon. According to police sources, four accused were arrested in Tamil Nadu’s Satyamangala, while the fifth was nabbed in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar. Of the four accused from Tamil Nadu, three had criminal background. Earlier it was suspected that all the accused are engineering students from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. However, they were not involved in the crime. Another special team working on bus ticket leads managed to nab the five culprits. Five special teams investigated the matter from different angles. According to the police, all the arrested accused turned out to be coolies. He often used to come to Mysore’s vegetable market to sell bananas. The accused used to consume liquor after selling bananas in the deserted area of ​​Lalitadripura, where the incident took place on Tuesday. He observed that the victim along with her male friend regularly visits the area. They chased the couple for three days and on the fourth day they attacked them. The accused first wanted to rob the couple, but later gang-raped the victim. The police, after scanning the crime scene, found a bus ticket bought in Tamil Nadu’s Talvadi and launched an investigation despite the victim’s refusal to record her statement. Investigators, who recovered beer bottles and cans from the crime scene, traced the liquor store and obtained CCTV footage. The special teams obtained information from the Tamil Nadu Police about the local criminals and matched the details including the video footage obtained in Mysore. The investigation also revealed that the accused were habitual offenders.
Police sources said the gang had committed another rape five months ago in Kuvempunagar area of ​​Mysore city.
