Recently, the central government had postponed the procurement of Kharif paddy in Punjab and Haryana till October 11 as the ripening of the crop has been delayed due to the recent heavy rains. In Punjab, the procurement of paddy for the Kharif marketing season of 2021-22 was to start from October 1. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had sought the intervention of Prime Minister Modi by tweeting in this matter so that the paddy procurement process can be resumed. Many opposition leaders have also demanded the government to withdraw the decision to postpone the purchase of paddy.
The Union Food Ministry had said in a statement, “It is informed that due to the recent heavy rains in Punjab and Haryana, there has been a delay in the ripening of paddy. Keeping in view the interests of the farmers and to save them from any inconvenience, the Ministry has decided that the procurement of paddy under the Minimum Support Price in these two states will start from October 11.
