DMK, allies win rural local body elections in Tamil Nadu
The ruling DMK along with the party and its allies in Tamil Nadu won the rural local body elections held in nine districts of the state on October 6 and 9. While the final results are yet to be announced by the State Election Commission, in almost all district panchayat unions and ward panchayat unions, the DMK alliance is far ahead of rival AIADMK and its allies.
The ruling combination is also leading in 27 wards of other districts where by-polls were held. This reflects a trend that the party has consolidated its presence in the state after the thumping victory it registered in the 2021 assembly elections.
Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has announced that out of 140 Zilla Panchayat seats, DMK won or was ahead in 88 seats till late last night, and its alliance partner Congress is leading in 4 seats.
Rival AIADMK is leading in only 4 out of 140 seats and this is a clear indicator of which direction the wind is blowing.
The DMK won 300 panchayat union wards out of a total of 1,381 wards in those nine districts.
The opposition AIADMK is leading in 50 seats out of 1,381 panchayat union wards, and its ally won only one seat. PMK, which was an alliance partner of AIADMK in the 2021 assembly elections and contested alone in rural local body elections, is leading in 13 seats. MDMK and VCK, DMK allies are leading in 8 and 3 wards respectively.
