Uttar Pradesh : Rebel Congress MLA Aditi Singh joins BJP

Ahead of the UP assembly elections, rebel Congress MLA Adit Singh has joined BJP. Aditi Singh is an MLA from Rae Bareli, and was earlier considered very close to the Gandhi family.

Aditi Singh had contested the last assembly elections on a Congress ticket, and reached the assembly for the first time after winning. Singh is the daughter of late Congress leader Akhilesh Singh, a five-time MLA. His joining BJP can make a dent in that stronghold of Congress, where BJP has not been able to enter till now.

Aditi Singh may have reached the assembly in 2017 as a Congress MLA. But on many occasions, she was seen fiercely criticizing her own party. Many times he has been seen praising and supporting the BJP and Yogi government. Along with this, Aditi has also voted in favor of BJP in the UP Assembly on more than one occasion.

In the time of Corona in lockdown, when Congress had talked about arranging 1000 buses for migrant laborers and the buses had reached the UP border, then Aditi Singh strongly criticized it. It was only after this that Aditi Singh was suspended by the Congress from the women’s wing of the party. Although she had remained in the party till now, but in a way, the party had kept away from her.

In July last year, UP Assembly Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit had rejected the Congress party’s demand to disqualify Aditi Singh. A letter was written on behalf of the Congress to the Speaker to disqualify him after the Rae Bareli MLA attended a special assembly session organized by the UP government on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birthday. Congress opposed this session.

This was not the first time that Aditi Singh has worked outside the party line. Earlier, he had supported the BJP-led central government on many issues including the abrogation of Article 370.
