Uttarakhand / Dehradun : More than 50 junior engineers arrested while traveling to CM residence, clashes with police

On Sunday, contract junior engineers (JEs) of the Public Works Department gathered from across the state went out to visit the Chief Minister’s residence, but the police stopped them by barricading in Hathibarkala, after a long ruckus, the police arrested more than 50 contractual junior engineers. Seated in vehicles and taken to Reserve Police Line Racecourse where he was released on personal bond.

To demand regularization, contract junior engineers of LNVs have been sitting on a dharna at Ekta Vihar on Sahasradhara Road since November 16. On Sunday, contract junior engineers traveled from Gandhi Park to the Chief Minister’s residence at around 12.45 pm, but were stopped by the police by barricading them at Hathibarkala. After this the engineers sat on the dharna on the same road. Suraj Doval, chairman of the contract committee, said that about 200 junior engineers are posted on contract in PWD. Most have completed 10-12 years of service in the department. The committee has been demanding regularization for a long time, but the government is not paying attention to it. Therefore, the engineers were compelled to take the path of agitation. Rama Rawat, Priyanka, Pooja Joshi etc. were involved in the rally.

Congress gave support

Congress supported the movement of contract junior engineer (JE) of Public Works Department. Congress state in-charge Devendra Yadav, Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat, Leader of Opposition Pritam Singh reached near the barricading in Hathibarkala on Sunday. During this, Congress leaders said that the government is treating the contract junior engineers of the Public Works Department step-motherly. He assured that their demand would be taken up in the coming session.
