Nagaland Police self-registers FIR against Para Special Forces, alleging murder

The Nagaland Police has registered a suo motu FIR against 21 Para Special Forces of the Indian Army in connection with the firing on civilians in MON district on Saturday evening, in which 13 people were killed. In the FIR, the Nagaland Police has clearly stated that the Para Special Forces had not informed the local police, nor had any police guide taken, hence the Army says it was a ‘misidentification’. In the FIR, the police have stated “the intention of the security forces to kill and injure civilians”.
Nagaland’s MON district, bordering Myanmar, is under the AFSPA ACT, so unless the central government gives permission, the army cannot be prosecuted. Suicide charges have been filed against Army Special Forces.
The situation in MON district remains tense but the situation is under control. State Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is going to visit MON today. The last rites of all the deceased villagers are also to be performed around 10 am today.
On Saturday evening, 13 villagers were shot dead due to mistaken identity in an operation by Para Forces. After this the villagers stormed the Assam Rifle camp. An army jawan was injured in this clash, who died on Sunday. Later, a total of 15 people have died in this incident due to the death of another injured villager.
Nagaland’s Mon district has banned public gatherings of more than five people at a time, and movement of all vehicles of non-essential nature, including commercial vehicles, under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Has gone. The state government has constituted a five-member SIT to probe the incident. On the other hand, the army has also ordered a court of inquiry.
