Uttarakhand : Dhami Government announces 5-member committee on Uniform Civil Code – Retired Justice Ranjana Desai to command the committee

  • Taking a big decision, the Pushkar Singh Dhami government of Uttarakhand has formed a five-member drafting committee for the Uniform Civil Code. Retired Justice Ranjana Desai has been given the command of the committee.

This committee will decide what kind of law will be. Retired judge Pramodi Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, retired IAS officer and former CS Shatrughan Singh of the state and Doon University Vice Chancellor Surekha Dangwal have been included in the five-member committee headed by retired judge Ranjana Desai.

CM Dhami talked about Uniform Civil Code only after winning the assembly elections. Dhami had said on Thursday in the Rishikul campus auditorium of Ayurveda University that a cabinet note has been prepared unanimously to implement the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand.

Now the committee will be constituted and its draft will be prepared soon. As soon as this draft is ready, it will be implemented in Uttarakhand. The Chief Minister had said that he would expect all the states of the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code in their respective states.

In the notification issued by the Home Department regarding the constitution of the committee, it has been said that to examine all relevant laws governing the individual civil affairs of all citizens residing in the state of Uttarakhand and with amendment in the draft law or existing law. To report, an expert committee has been set up to examine and implement the applicable laws relating to marriage, divorce, property rights, succession and inheritance, goal giving and maintenance and guardianship etc. and Uniform Civil Code.
