Zakia Jafri’s petition against clean chit to PM Modi dismissed by the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition filed against the SIT report giving clean chit to the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots. This petition was filed on behalf of Zakia Jafri. The court upheld the investigation report of the SIT. It is believed that Zakia Jafri is the wife of former MP Ahsan Jafri.
A bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice CT Ravikumar gave this verdict. The Supreme Court had reserved the decision seven months ago on 9 December 2021 after completing a marathon hearing on Zakia Jafri’s petition. The SIT formed to investigate the Gujarat riots had given a clean chit to the then Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Court mentioned Teesta Setalvad
In its decision, the Supreme Court has also mentioned the past record and role of social activist Teesta Setalvad, citing the SIT report and the arguments of the Gujarat government. The court has written in its decision that more investigation is needed about Teesta Setalvad. Because Teesta was secretly using the feelings of Zakia Jafri in this case for her own selfishness. That’s why she was constantly involved in this matter. Because Zakia Ahsan Jafri is the real victim in this whole matter. But Teesta, according to her, was controlling them on the pretext of helping them in this case. Whereas she was not only taking interest in this case, but was also fabricating things of her own choice, keeping a sense of revenge from the need of serving her own interests.
The Supreme Court in its judgment also said that the statements of the claimants to attend the Chief Minister’s meeting were also politically sensationalized in the matter. In fact, Sanjiv Bhatt, Hiren Pandya and RB Sreekumar gave statements before the SIT which This was later proved to be baseless. Investigation revealed that these people were not even in the meeting called to review law and order. This false claim reinforces the notion that there was a high level conspiracy and well-planned It was implemented properly. When the SIT investigated on the basis of facts, then this fabric of conspiracy collapsed like a palace of cards.
Ehsaan Jafri died in the riots
In fact, during the 2002 Gujarat riots, Zakia Jafri’s husband Ehsan Jafri, then a Congress MLA, was killed by a rioting mob. Ehsan Jafri was also killed in the Gulberg Society massacre during the Gujarat riots. Ehsan Jafri’s widow Zakia Jafri challenged the SIT report by filing a petition in the Supreme Court.
In the report of the SIT, people holding high positions in the state were given a clean chit. The SIT had ruled out any conspiracy on the part of high officials of the state to instigate the Godhra train fire incident and the riots that followed. In 2017, the Gujarat High Court dismissed Zakia’s complaint against the closure report of the SIT.
What did Ravi Shankar Prasad say?
Zakia Jafri had approached the Supreme Court after the Gujarat High Court dismissed the petition challenging the SIT report. Even the Supreme Court has now rejected it.
After this decision, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad has targeted the opposition fiercely. It has been emphasized that an attempt was made to defame PM Modi through a fake case. The Left’s gang was put behind them.
