The Indian women’s hockey team crashed out of the title race at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup on Monday with a 0-1 loss to co-hosts Spain in a tough crossover match. The three quarters saw a tough fight between the two teams but just three minutes before the end of the stipulated time, Marta Segu scored a goal on the rebound to take India out of the title race. Like the entire tournament, in the crossover match too, the Indian team had to bear the brunt of not converting a penalty corner into a goal.

India got four penalty corners against Spain’s three but the team could not convert any of them into a goal. India got the first penalty corner in the eighth minute but the Indian players failed to penetrate Spain’s defence. There was hesitation in the game of both the teams in the first quarter and both the teams made mistakes during this period. During this, there were very few scoring opportunities. Spain then tried to dominate and put pressure on India’s defense line.

Indian captain and goalkeeper Savita meanwhile made some good defenses. The last few minutes were a lot of pressure for Spain. García was shown the yellow card and Segu was shown the green card, leaving the team to play with nine players. Despite being two players more, the Indian team failed to take advantage of the opportunity and got out of the medal race. India will now take on Canada in the ninth to 16th place classification match here on Tuesday. In the quarterfinals, New Zealand will face Germany, co-hosts Netherlands will face Belgium, Australia will face Spain and England will face Argentina.
