Uttarakhand’s Women and Child Welfare Minister Rekha Arya has come into the limelight after one of her controversial statements. In a recent statement, Minister Rekha Arya has asked the officers of her department to click a selfie while performing water abhishek on the Shivling on the concluding day of Kanwar Yatra. Rekha Arya, minister in the Uttarakhand government, has also directed the officials to send their selfies to the email id of the department. Along with this, they have also been asked to share their selfies with their respective district officials on WhatsApp. He said the move would help in promoting the “Beti Bachao Scheme” of the central government under the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

25 km grand kanwar yatra
Minister Rekha Arya is also planning a 25-km ‘Grand Kanwar Yatra’ from Haridwar to Rishikesh, which will include officers from all departments, bureaucrats, Anganwadi workers and volunteers from other departments. The yatra will conclude with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami performing Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva at the 1300-year-old Virbhadra temple in Rishikesh.

She said that she herself would take part in this 25-km long journey as a Shiva devotee Kanwadiya. Sharing a video on Twitter, she said she would seek “the blessings of saints and heads of akhadas in Haridwar” during the yatra. She said that she will take a pledge to improve the sex ratio of the state by 2025 at the Lord Shiva temple in Rishikesh along with all the Shiva devotees involved in the yatra.

Opposition attacked
After his order, Rekha Arya has come under target of the opposition. Opposition leaders have said that instead of issuing such instructions related to religion, attention should be paid to the increasing crime rate and atrocities against women. At the same time, many government officials have also expressed their displeasure over this move.

After the controversy escalated, Rekha Arya clarified that she has given an invitation and not a gun on her forehead. It is up to you whether you want to participate in the charity program or not. Whether one wants to stay in the program or not depends on the desire. When we invite someone, we leave it at his will. Rekha Arya said that no instructions have been given to any official for the religious event.
