Neelam Sharma lived with her family in Agra. On February 20, 2014, Vijay Sharma, his daughter and son had gone to Firozabad to attend a wedding. Neelam was alone at home. When the family returned home, they found that Neelam and pet dog Jackie had been stabbed to death by someone and essential items, jewelry and cash were missing from the house.

After this Vijay Sharma told the police about this, after which when the police arrested Ashu and interrogated him, he broke down and confessed his crime.
