United Cup Tennis: Poland reached quarter-finals, defeated Spain 2-1 with the help of Swiatek

World number one Iga Swiatek performed well under pressure to help Poland reach the quarter-finals of the United Cup tennis tournament with a 2-1 win over Spain on Monday. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina gave Spain a 1-0 lead by defeating Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. After this, Swiatek leveled the match by defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-2, 6-1 in the women’s singles.

Swiatek and Hurkacz then registered a comfortable 6-0, 6-0 win in the mixed doubles to secure Poland’s place in the last eight. Meanwhile, Casper Ruud kept Norway’s hopes of making the quarter-finals alive by registering wins in singles and mixed doubles against Croatia. Donna Vekic gave Croatia a 1-0 lead by defeating Malen Helgo 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Ruud then defeated Borna Coric 6–4, 6–1 to advance to a deciding mixed doubles match, which Norway won in a tiebreaker. Earlier on Sunday, Novak Djokovic, playing his first match after a decade in Perth, led Serbia to a 2-1 victory over China.
