Missile attack on oil tanker ship leaving Russia for India, Houthi rebels took responsibility

An oil tanker ship heading from Russia to India was attacked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the Red Sea by launching missiles. The Iran-backed militant organization claimed responsibility for this on Saturday.

The owner of the Andromeda Star oil tanker has reported that the ship is damaged. The ship is part of the Russian trade route which left from Primorsk, Russia for Vadinar, India.

Ship suffered minor damage: America

The US Central Command informed through X handle that a missile fell near another ship MV Maisha, but it did not suffer any damage. It was told that Houthi rebels had launched three anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen into the Red Sea, which caused minor damage to Andromeda Star.

Houthi spokesman Yahya Sareeya said the Panama-flagged Andromeda Star was British-owned, but shipping data suggests it was recently sold, according to LSEG data and Ambrey. Its current owner is Seychelles-registered.

The attack on the ship follows a halt in the Houthi rebels’ campaign to target ships linked to Israel, the US and Britain.

Houthis have attacked several ships since November

Showing their support for Palestine, Houthi rebels have carried out several drone and missile attacks in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait and Gulf of Aden since November last year.

The USS Dwight D Eisenhower aircraft carrier left the Red Sea via the Suez Canal on Friday after assisting the US-led coalition to protect commercial ships. On Friday, Houthi rebels claimed to have shot down a US MQ-9 drone in Yemen’s Saada province.
