Uttarakhand: Chlorine gas leak in Nainital, many people admitted to hospital, area evacuated
A case of chlorine gas leakage from a cylinder kept in the Sukhatal Jal Sansthan pump house has come to light. It is being told that the health of many people deteriorated due to coming in contact with chlorine gas, who have been admitted to BD Pandey Hospital Nainital.
After the information of chlorine gas leak, the team of district administration, police, SDRF, NDRF, fire brigade and health department reached the spot by late evening. According to the information, people were saying that there was gas leakage in the pump house of Jal Sansthan in Sukhatal area since day. In the evening, when the gas leaked more, the smell of gas started spreading in the area. After this, there was a stir in the area.
As soon as the information of the case was received, the administration team reached the spot under the leadership of SDM Pramod Kumar. During this time, the health of the people who came in contact with the gas in the area started deteriorating. According to the information, a total of 6 people were taken to BD Pandey Hospital by ambulance, where they are undergoing treatment.
Engineer Ramesh Garbyal immediately informed the fire and police department. Police and fire brigade personnel evacuated the surrounding areas and sent people to safer places. Meanwhile, fire officer Kishore Upadhyay said that chlorine gas is disposed of by chemical reaction with baking soda. A gas cylinder weighing about one quintal was disposed of by digging a deep pit in the area.
Meanwhile, Jal Sansthan Executive Engineer Ramesh Garbyal said that there is no danger from the cylinder leaking. People living nearby were shifted to safer places in time. The chlorine gas cylinder was kept in the pump house to filter water, the reason for its leakage could not be ascertained.
Meanwhile, Nainital SDM Pramod Kumar said that information about gas leak in the area was received at four in the evening. After which he reached the spot and the area of 100 meters around was evacuated. About 100 people have been sent to safer places.
Joint Magistrate Varuna Agarwal said that the situation in the area is normal at present. Preparations are being made to close the cylinder from which chlorine gas is leaking by digging a pit in the ground. If anyone in the area falls ill, they are being sent to the hospital.
