Today is the first date of November. November month has a great significance in the history of Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand state came into existence on the 9th of this month in the year 2000. Before this, this part of the Himalayas was in Uttar Pradesh. The interesting fact is that the month of November is also known for the formation of 9 states and 2 union territories in Indian history.

Uttarakhand was neglected

First of all, let’s talk about Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand state was established on 9 November 2000. At the time of establishment, it was named Uttaranchal. Actually, when Uttarakhand was a part of UP, at that time the development plans could not climb the mountain. This part of the then Uttar Pradesh was like a picnic spot for ministers, MLAs, leaders and officers. Health, education, transport, agriculture and employment were a distant dream for here.

The demand for a separate state was raised for the first time in 1938

If we look into the historical documents, the demand for a separate state was going on even before independence. The demand to make this hilly part of the Himalayas a state was first raised in a special session of the Indian National Congress held in Srinagar between 5 and 6 May 1938. Even after independence, the demand for a separate state remained alive. However, it did not gain much momentum. But the 90s were a decisive time for the Uttarakhand state movement.

42 state agitators were martyred

In 1994, the demand for a separate state became a mass movement. The movement had become so widespread that people from every class, caste and religion of the state participated in it. 42 people were martyred in police repression in the movement for a separate state at various places. If it is called the biggest movement after India’s independence movement, it would not be an exaggeration. Finally, on 9 November 2000, the dream of a separate state was fulfilled.
