There has been an alarming increase in the cases of death penalty across the world. According to Amnesty International’s annual report on the death penalty, the year 2024 saw the highest number of people sentenced to death in the last decade. There has been a huge increase in the death penalty cases mainly in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. In the year 2024, 1518 people were sentenced to death worldwide, which is 32 percent more than the previous year. This is the highest since the 1634 death sentences given in 2015.

The human rights organization said that the actual number is much higher, as its figures do not include death penalty figures in the world’s most brutal countries China and North Korea or Vietnam, which are believed to use the death penalty extensively.

More than 90 percent executions in three countries
According to the report, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia alone are responsible for 91 percent of the death sentences given worldwide. Iraq quadrupled the number of executions from 16 to 63. Saudi Arabia nearly doubled it from 172 to 345. Iran led the way with 972 executions in 2024, 119 more than in 2023.

Iran executes 30 women

Thirty women were among those executed in Iran, representing 64 per cent of all executions of women worldwide. All executions in Iraq were for terrorism offences, while Iran carried out nearly half of all executions for drug-related offences.

The US also saw a rise in executions, with a total of 25 executions, one more than in 2023 and the most since 2018. Other countries that saw a rise in executions include Egypt and Yemen, where the total number doubled from at least 15 to at least 38. Amnesty said only 15 countries executed people in 2024, the lowest on record for the second consecutive year.
