The Government of India has declared Ehsan ur Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani employee posted in the Pakistan High Commission, as ‘persona non grata’ and ordered him to leave the country within 24 hours. It has been revealed that this person was hatching conspiracies against India while sitting in Delhi. According to sources, this person was a staff of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this employee was involved in activities contrary to his diplomatic norms in India. The Ministry of External Affairs issued a formal protest letter (démarche) and informed the Charge d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission of this decision. According to official sources, the officer was involved in anti-India activities and conspiracies while sitting in Delhi, which is not acceptable under his official role.
How was the identity revealed
Actually, Punjab Police has arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in espionage activities linked to a Pakistani officer posted at the High Commission in New Delhi. Based on reliable intelligence, a suspect was arrested for leaking sensitive information related to the activities of the Indian Army to a Pakistan-based handler. Based on the revelations made during interrogation, another associate was identified and detained. Initial investigation has revealed that they were being paid money online for providing confidential information. They were in constant touch with the handler and used to transfer funds to other agents. Two mobile phones have also been recovered. This action is a big step towards dismantling the cross-border espionage network.
Action was taken earlier too
Taking this incident seriously, the Indian government has made it clear that violation of diplomatic norms will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken in such cases. This development is being considered very important in the context of already tense relations between the two countries. Even before this, India had ordered most of the Pakistani diplomats to leave the country.
What is persona non grata?
Persona non grata is a Latin word, which means unwanted person. This word is used in the world of diplomacy when a country starts considering a foreign diplomat or official as anti-national. This happens when that person is found involved in espionage, conspiracy, or other improper activities. When someone is declared persona non grata, he is usually ordered to leave the country within 24 to 72 hours. This is considered the strongest diplomatic protest in international relations.
