Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to the public on April 14. With this, a “Green Corridor” for employment and tourism has been inaugurated for the state of Uttarakhand. The journey between Delhi and Dehradun, which previously took six hours, will now be completed in just two and a half hours. Consequently, the number of tourists visiting the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, Corbett and Rajaji National Parks, Mussoorie, Tehri, and various other tourist destinations across Uttarakhand is expected to rise.
The “Green Corridor” Set to Give a New Direction to the State’s Economy
It is worth noting that this expressway is not merely a transportation project; it is poised to emerge as a “Green Corridor” that will steer the state’s economy in a new direction. By bridging the geographical gap between the hills and the plains, this corridor will serve as a powerful conduit connecting farmers, entrepreneurs, and local producers directly to national and international markets.
Uttarakhand’s Traditional Products to Reach Major Cities
Now, traditional and high-quality products—such as the renowned apples of Harsil, the Rajma (kidney beans) of Jyotirmath and Chakrata, the red rice of Purola, and the Buransh (Rhododendron) juice of Rudraprayag—will be able to reach major cities far more rapidly and at a lower cost than ever before. The reduction in logistics costs will ensure that farmers receive better prices for their produce, thereby boosting their income and fostering economic stability.
The project will also provide a fillip to ancillary industries within the state, such as cold storage facilities, warehousing, food processing units, and agri-logistics. This, in turn, will generate new employment opportunities for the local youth. The expressway project is expected to accelerate growth across the transportation sector, agro-based industries, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Furthermore, it will play a significant role in mitigating the problem of rural migration to a considerable extent.
The Expressway: A Boon for the Tourism Sector
Moreover, this corridor is set to prove immensely beneficial for the tourism sector. Thanks to enhanced connectivity, tourists from both within the country and abroad will be able to easily access Uttarakhand’s remote and pristine natural destinations, thereby infusing new vitality into local businesses, the hospitality industry, and handicraft enterprises.
