The opposition is protesting from Parliament to the streets regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) going on in Bihar. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has made a big comment about SIR.
SC’s comment
The Supreme Court said that if illegality is proved in the Bihar voter list, then the results of SIR can be canceled by September.
Let us tell you, the Supreme Court heard petitions challenging the Election Commission’s voter re-verification process, which is taking place a few months before the assembly elections in Bihar.
Petitioners raised questions
During the hearing, the petitioners questioned the constitutional basis of this process and said that the Election Commission, which had sought documents to prove citizenship, does not have the right to decide on this matter.
What did the petitioners argue?
The petitioners argued that the matter of citizenship is the jurisdiction of the Government of India, especially the Union Home Ministry. He said, “The Election Commission says Aadhaar is not enough to determine citizenship, but they do not have the power to determine citizenship. The court had said they only need to ensure the identity of voters.”
