A shocking incident has come to light in which a man attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during the weekly public hearing held at her official residence in Civil Lines on Wednesday morning. The Delhi Police immediately took the attacker into custody and identified him as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakaria, 41, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. The incident has raised serious questions on the security system of Delhi, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has termed it a “political conspiracy”.

Details of the incident

According to the information received, during the public hearing, Rajesh Bhai reached the Chief Minister with some papers. He first had a normal conversation, but suddenly started shouting and pulled the Chief Minister’s hand and attacked her. In this scuffle, Rekha Gupta’s head hit the corner of the table, causing her minor injuries. The security personnel and others present at the spot immediately intervened and caught the attacker. The Delhi Police has confirmed the incident and informed the Home Ministry about it.

Eyewitness Anjali said, “The accused first showed some papers and then suddenly tried to slap her. The police caught him immediately.” However, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva denied the slapping and said that it was a case of pushing and shoving, in which the Chief Minister’s head hit the table. Describing Rekha Gupta as a “strong woman”, he said that she will continue her regular work and public hearing.

The attacker’s animal lover connection

Police investigation revealed that Rajesh Bhai is a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat and is a rickshaw driver. His mother Bhanu Ben claimed that her son is an animal lover and was upset about “dog-related issues”, due to which he came to Delhi. According to sources, one of Rajesh’s relatives is in jail, and he had come to the public hearing with a petition for his release. However, police investigation revealed that he had done a recce of the Chief Minister’s residence before the attack and had reached there with the intention of attacking.

BJP claims conspiracy

BJP leaders have termed the attack as a conspiracy of the opposition. Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “This attack was well planned. The opposition cannot tolerate that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is constantly staying among the people and solving their problems.” BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri called it a “100% political conspiracy”, while Pravesh Verma claimed that the accused was doing recce of the Chief Minister for the last 24 hours.

BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar said that the attacker’s direct connection with any political party has not been proved, but his statements indicate that he may be dissatisfied with a party. On the other hand, opposition parties have also condemned the attack. AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi said, “There is a place for dissent in democracy, but violence is unacceptable. Delhi Police should take strict action.” Congress leader Devendra Yadav questioned the security arrangements and said, “When the Chief Minister is not safe, what will be the condition of the safety of the general public?”

Questions on police investigation and security

The Delhi Police has detained the accused at the Civil Lines police station and is questioning him intensively. The police is trying to find out what was his motive behind the attack and whether it was a well-planned conspiracy. Along with examining the CCTV footage, information about the accused’s background is also being gathered from the Gujarat Police. Intelligence agencies have also become active in this case.

This incident has raised questions on the security arrangements of the Chief Minister. Delhi Police said that the security lapse is being investigated and soon its full report will be submitted to the Home Ministry. Based on this, the security of the Chief Minister can be increased.
