Sandhya Mukherjee refused to accept the Padma Shri award, the singer said- ‘Feeling humiliated’

The Government of India announced the Padma and Padma Shri awards on the occasion of the 73rd Republic Day. In which celebrities who have made their special contribution in the fields of art, sports, literature and social have been honored with this award. Hindi cinema’s famous and veteran singer Sandhya Mukherjee alias Sandhya Mukhopadhyay was honored with the Padma Shri award, but she refused to accept this honor.
Sandhya Mukherjee is 90 years old and is a famous singer. He worked with and sang songs for several music directors including SD Burman, Anil Biswas, Madan Mohan, Roshan and Salil Chowdhury. According to the news of the English website India Today, Sandhya Mukherjee’s daughter Soumi Sengupta has told that her mother has refused to accept the Padma Shri award. She considers it an insult to her now.
According to Soumi Sengupta, Sandhya Mukherjee has told the senior officer who called from Delhi that she is not ready to be awarded Padma Shri in the Republic Day honors list. Soumi Sengupta said, ‘At the age of 90, it is humiliating for her to be selected for the Padma Shri after a singing career spanning almost eight decades. Along with this, Soumi Sengupta has also appealed not to give political form to Sandhya Mukherjee’s non-acceptance of Padma Shri award.
He said, “Padma Shri is more suitable for a junior artist and not for Geetashree Sandhya Mukhopadhyay. His family and his fans feel the same way. It should not be given a political form. He is away from any kind of politics. So please don’t try to find any kind of political reason in this. They feel very humiliated.
Let us tell you that Sandhya Mukherjee sang thousands of Bengali songs in the 60s and 70s. Along with this, he has left an indelible mark in the music world by singing songs in dozens of languages. Sandhya Mukherjee was awarded the Banga Vibhushan, its highest civilian award, by the Government of West Bengal in 2001. In the year 1970, Sandhya Mukherjee was awarded the National Award for the song ‘Jai Jayanti’.
