17 inches of rain in one day in Tennessee, 22 dead and many missing

At least 22 people have died and many people are missing after floods caused by 17 inches of rain in the US state of Middle Tennessee. On Sunday, rescue teams searched for people among the damaged houses and rubble. Roads were washed away in rural areas due to heavy rains on Saturday, officials said.

Christy Brown, the health and safety inspection coordinator at Humphreys County Schools, said emergency workers were searching people door-to-door. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed 22 people were killed in the area. He said that most of those missing lived in nearby areas where the water rose the fastest. Two twins are among the dead.

The National Meteorological Service said Humphreys County received about 17 inches of rain in less than a day on Saturday. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee visited the area.
