Rupee climbs 17 paise to Rs 74.22 per dollar

Mumbai, 23 August. The rupee on Monday closed 17 paise higher at 74.22 (provisional) against the dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market on weakening of the dollar in overseas markets and a firm trend in domestic equity markets.

Traders said, however, rising crude oil prices in the international markets limited the rupee’s gains.

The rupee opened strong at 74.27 at the beginning of trading in the interbank foreign exchange market. After revolving in the range of Rs 74.22 to Rs 74.30 during trading, it finally closed at Rs 74.22 per dollar, up by 17 paise.
On Friday, it had closed at Rs 74.39 against the dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, reflecting the US dollar’s position against the six major currencies, declined 0.25 per cent to 93.27.

Brent crude, considered a global benchmark, rose 3.45 per cent to $ 67.43 per barrel.
Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market, selling shares worth Rs 2,287.03 crore on Friday, according to stock exchange data.
