“‘Rohit won the Asia Cup without Kohli…’, says BCCI chief Ganguly

“The Indian cricket team under the leadership of Rohit Sharma is now going to enter a new era. On Wednesday, the Cricket Board of India (BCCI) appointed Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI team in place of Virat Kohli. He has already said goodbye to T20 captaincy.  Former Virat Kohli will now be seen captaining India only in Test matches.

By the way, before the T20 World Cup 2021, Virat Kohli had talked about leaving the captaincy from the shortest format. Virat had insisted that he wants to continue as captain in One Day International and Test cricket. But BCCI was not in favor of having two captains in limited overs cricket.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly confirmed this in an interview. Ganguly revealed that the board had not requested Virat Kohli to step down before the T20 World Cup. Because the selectors were not in favor of having two different captains for ODIs and T20 Internationals.

Great record under Rohit’s captaincy

Now Sourav Ganguly has mentioned the reasons behind choosing Rohit Sharma in the role of captain. The former Indian captain said that Rohit has a great record as a captain in the limited overs format. Sourav Ganguly said in an interview to a news channel, ‘Of course. That’s why the selectors have backed him (Rohit Sharma). He will find a way to do well and I hope he will be able to do so.

“Ganguly said, ‘His record for Mumbai Indians in IPL is amazing…Winning five titles. He had captained Team India a few years back in the Asia Cup, which was won by the Indian team. India did it without Kohli.’  Had won. Winning title without Kohli shows how strong he was of that team. That’s why he has got success in big tournaments. They have a good team, so hopefully they will take the team forward  .'”
