Former IGP Traffic Basant Rath has once again surprised everyone with his decision. Basant Rath has resigned from the Indian Police Service. He has sent resignation letter to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta. He has given information about this by posting a post on his social media. In this, he told that he can soon join electoral politics.
Sharing the copy on Twitter, Basat Rath wrote, ‘I want to resign from the Indian Police Service to take part in electoral politics. Please accept this letter my request for resignation/voluntary retirement and proceed accordingly.’

About seven hours before the tweet of this resignation letter, he has made another tweet, which is getting a lot of response from social media users. In this tweet, he has written, ‘If I ever join any political party, it will be BJP. If I ever contest elections, that region will be Kashmir. If I ever join politics, it will happen before March 6, 2024.

Was suspended in July 2020, has an old relationship with controversies
In July 2020, Basant Rath was suspended by the Central Government with immediate effect. Then the order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs said, “Allegations of gross misconduct and misbehavior against Basant Rath have come to the notice of the government and disciplinary action has been contemplated in this regard.” During the period of suspension, Rath will be headquartered at Jammu and he will not leave it without the permission of the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
A few days before this action, Basant Rath had lodged a police complaint against Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh alleging threat to his life and liberty. Basant Rath is a 2000 cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. He is an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He was posted as Inspector General of Police in Jammu and Kashmir Police. In the year 2002, Basant Rath was posted for the first time in Mandi of district Poonch. He was born in Uttarkashi village of Pipli in Puri district of Odisha. His father Harshikesh was a village priest and farmer. Basant Rath is also known as ‘Book Baba’. He has also provided books for reading to many needy students till now.
