Taiwan’s foreign minister bluntly – China should not tell whom we want to welcome

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently visited Taiwan. China has been furious since her visit. China has not only surrounded Taiwan, but is also conducting live fire drills. In the meantime, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister has clearly told China in strong words that China cannot give us instructions as to whom Taiwan should welcome and who should not.
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said that the threat to us from China has increased much more than before. But still we will stand firm to defend our freedom and democracy. Wu said that China has always been threatening Taiwan and it has increased in the last few years. He said that whether US Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan or not, there has always been a Chinese military threat against Taiwan. This is a crisis that we desperately need to deal with.
‘China can’t give us directions’
Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said that China cannot under any circumstances instruct Taiwan on whom we welcome and whom we do not. In fact, Taiwan last week visited the US Congressional delegation led by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. and said that the visit once again emphasizes the solid US commitment to Taiwan.
China is continuously doing live fire drills
It was also Nancy Pelosi’s first visit to Taiwan in two decades. In view of Pelosi’s visit, China started conducting several military exercises near Taiwan. More than 100 Chinese fighter jets and 10 warships conducted live-fire drills around Taiwan in the past few days. Several Chinese planes and ships have been sighted around Taiwan. Recently Taiwan said that China is continuously attacking the main island.
‘China is trying to scare us’
Joseph Wu says he worries that China may actually wage a war against Taiwan. But he is trying to scare us and the best way to deal with this is that we also have to tell China that we are not scared.
“No one can snatch our freedom”
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began conducting joint exercises in at least six areas around Taiwan, which were to end on Sunday. But the Chinese military said on Monday that it would continue the exercises near Taiwan. Responding to this, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Wu said that China is not sure that they have made up their mind to use force to usurp Taiwan. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said that the important thing for us is that we need to be prepared at all costs. We want to protect the freedom and democracy that we enjoy here and no one can take it away from us.
