India’s star tennis player Leander Paes has recently approached the Mumbai Sessions Court against the order of a Metropolitan Magistrate Court in February. The Metropolitan Magistrate Court found Leander Paes guilty of domestic violence. Rhea Pillai had filed a case of domestic violence against Leander Paes in 2014.
While hearing that case, the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in February 2022 had directed Leander Paes to pay Riya Pillai a monthly maintenance of Rs one lakh and monthly rent of Rs 50,000.
Leander Paes, in his petition, has sought quashing of the February 2022 order and an interim stay on it till his appeal is decided. The petition is likely to be heard next week.
Leander Paes, in his application, has said that the nature of their relationship was not in the nature of marriage. He remained cordial with her despite their breakup for the sake of their child, born in 2006. Paes has argued for delay in filing the appeal citing health reasons of his father. Leander Paes is in a relationship with actress Kim Sharma these days.

Leander Paes’ petition also states that when Rhea Pillai got two flats from actor Sanjay Dutt as part of her divorce agreement, they continued to live in their shared residence. Due to this he was financially burdened.
Before the magistrate’s court, Leander Paes had said that Riya Pillai’s petition was not maintainable under the Act, as she was not divorced from Sanjay Dutt by the time he and Riya started living together. They got divorced in the year 2008.
