Uttarakhand: CM Dhami inaugurates Mission Drugs Free Devbhoomi, CM appeals to the youth – youth should say no to drugs

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, while inaugurating Mission Drugs Free Devbhoomi at District Jail, Suddhowala, Dehradun, called upon the people of the state, especially the youth of the state, that the Uttarakhand government has resolved to make Devbhoomi Uttarakhand drug free by 2025. For the accomplishment of this resolution, along with the government, society, youth, NGOs, celebrities, successful people and various social-educational institutions will have to come forward and work together. This campaign of the government has to be made a grand campaign.

The contribution of every Uttarakhand resident is important in this mass campaign. Chief Minister Dhami said that the youth should strongly say not to take any kind of drugs and also make other people aware about the side effects of drugs. On this occasion, the Chief Minister inaugurated the newly constructed Bakery Unit in the District Jail. He inspected the computer training center operated by the courtesy of Vedanta Foundation in the District Jail, Jail Ornaments Exhibition, handmade exhibition by women prisoners, Vocational Training Center in Jail. The Chief Minister inquired about the well-being of the prisoners and asked them to adopt positive thinking. He said that it is expected that the products manufactured in the jails will be available for sale in the local market in future. Chief Minister Dhami gave his message through Doon Jail Radio operated from the prison.

On this occasion, Chief Minister Dhami announced that the name of the Prisons Department would be changed to “Prison Administration and Correctional Service” and “Detainee Correctional Home” would be replaced by “Detainee Correctional Home”. Formation of Correctional Service Wing as a separate correctional service in the Prisons Department. While constituting the Prisoner Welfare Fund, a lump sum amount of Rs. 01 crore will be provisioned in the fund. Monthly nutritious diet allowance of Rs. 01 thousand will be allowed to the prisoner cadre. Uniform allowance will be admissible to the Cadre of Prison Guard. A training center for skill development program will be set up in District Jail, Dehradun for prisoner training and rehabilitation.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that prison is also a part of the society. Prisoners should consider prison as a place of penance and reform and take a pledge to contribute to nation building by joining the mainstream of the society with positive thinking in future. He said that it is the resolution of the government that in 2025, when we are celebrating the silver jubilee of the establishment of the state, our state should become completely drug free. We will be the leading state in every field. Uttarakhand will also make its invaluable contribution in the campaign of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. Prisons also house drug addicts, whose maintenance/care is a big challenge for the prison administration. Awareness about drug free campaign should also be brought in all the prisons of the state. It is commendable that under this campaign against drugs, Drug De Addiction Center is being started in District Jail, Dehradun in collaboration with Subharti Medical College. We have given instructions to take strictest action against the drug peddlers.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the government has made a transparent permanent policy for premature release of life imprisonment prisoners, which would make the prisoner eligible for release after completing 14 years of sentence. At present, the release of 160 prisoners is being considered under this policy. The prisoners were deprived of the last rites of their relatives after their death. The government has made an easier parole system as compared to other states. The government has made arrangements for immediate 24-hour parole for funeral rites and 15-day parole for post-death rites on the death of a prisoner’s family.

On this occasion, Additional Chief Secretary Radha Raturi told that for the skill development of the prisoners, arrangements have been made by the government for many vocational trainings in carpentry, carpet weaving, tailoring, pot making, LED skirting etc. Efforts are being made to ensure the supply of manufactured products made in jails to government offices.
