1774 crores sought for Saung dam drinking water project, Uttarakhand CM Dhami met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had a courtesy call on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi today. During this, CM Dhami requested the Union Finance Minister to finance an amount of 1774 crores for Saung Dam drinking water project under special assistance in capital expenditure. CM Dhami said that this project will solve the problem of drinking water in Dehradun. Along with this, the lake will also be constructed under the Saung project.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that drinking water is being arranged through tube wells in Dehradun city. Due to which the ground water level is constantly declining. Apart from this, due to the continuous increase in the population in Dehradun, the demand for water is increasing. Due to which the drinking water supply system that is in place at present, it will not be possible to meet the future demand of drinking water. Therefore, in view of this problem and to provide continuous drinking water facility in future, ‘Saung Dam Drinking Water Project’ is proposed on the Saung river. Whose total cost is 2021 crore rupees.

At the same time, CM Dhami said that with the construction of Song Dam drinking water project, 150 MLD drinking water through ‘gravity’ will be available to about 10 lakh population of Dehradun city and sub-urban areas. After the construction of the project, the dependence of drinking water from tube wells will be almost eliminated, due to which there will be a huge reduction in ground water exploitation. Not only this, it will also increase the ground water level and reduce the emission of green house gases.

He said that after the construction of Song Dam drinking water project, there will be a huge reduction in new tube wells and the expenditure related to their operation and maintenance. Apart from this, a lake will also be constructed under the Saung Dam project, which will increase tourism activity and generate employment in the Saung project area. Increase in tourism will increase the income of the local people. The construction of the lake will be beneficial for the environment. An important advantage of this project will also be on flood control.

About 15,000 population of 10 villages of Dehradun district will get protection from annual flood in Saung river. The project is very important for the water supply of Dehradun city. All necessary technical, forest land transfer stage 1 and other necessary approvals related to the project have been received from the concerned departments and ministries. About Rs 247 crore will be borne by the state government for the rehabilitation and resettlement of the people affected by the project.
