Will not repeat again, will be careful in future, Baba Ramdev apologized in front of SC

Yoga guru Swami Ramdev and Patanjali managing director Acharya Balkrishna appeared in the Supreme Court on Tuesday. He offered to publish a public apology in newspapers to avoid contempt charges against him for violating a court order in relation to misleading advertisements claiming cure for various diseases.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and Balakrishna appeared before the bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice A Amanullah. The bench talked to him in Hindi. Justice Kohli told Ramdev that the court respects the work done by him to promote yoga but the pharmaceutical business is commercial and to sell their products they are undermining the effectiveness of the modern medical system and questioning it. The bench told Ramdev that he had violated the court order by holding a press conference after an order was passed by the court in November 2023. Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, representing Ramdev and Balkrishna, said they would issue a public apology. Ramdev said, ‘We are apologizing unconditionally and wholeheartedly.’ And said that his intention was not to hurt or contempt anyone or to violate court orders. He insisted that he actually had evidence-based evidence and that he was talking about clinical evidence, but he shouldn’t have said all that.

Ramdev assured the court that he would make every possible effort to ensure that it is not repeated. Balkrishna said yes as per Baba Ramdev’s request. Also said, ‘We have clinical evidence, but we are apologizing. Justice Amanullah told the founders of Patanjali that they cannot degrade other streams of medicines. Ramdev said that he compared Ayurveda and Allopathy enthusiastically and it will not be repeated.

The bench told him that the judges had not yet decided whether his apology should be accepted or not. Ramdev says that he knows that several thousand people follow him and he will be more careful in future. The bench reiterated that they should not discredit allopathy and emphasized that ‘the law is the same for all’. The bench said, ‘We have not decided whether you should be pardoned or not’ and he has violated the court orders more than once.

The top court said the lawyer representing Ramdev and Balkrishna said they would defend themselves and sought a week’s time to respond to the issues discussed during the hearing. The apex court has fixed the next hearing of the case on April 23. Ramdev and his aide Balakrishna had appeared in the apex court in connection with the hearing of the contempt case against Patanjali Ayurved in relation to misleading advertisements regarding the treatment of various diseases. Last week, the court had strongly reprimanded the founders of Patanjali and also pulled up the Uttarakhand government for not taking action against the Haridwar-based company.
