On February 17, he breathed his last in a nursing home in New South Wales while he was sleeping. But his family informed about his death on Monday (March 3).

The world’s largest blood and plasma donor

James is called the world’s largest blood and plasma donor, because millions of children’s lives have been saved through his plasma. People used to lovingly call James Harrison ‘the man with golden hands’. A rare type of antibody was present in his blood, which is called anti-D. There was a rare antibody in his blood plasma. From this, injections called anti-D were made for pregnant women affected by a disease called Rhesus, so that their own blood does not attack their unborn child.

Donated blood for the first time at the age of 18

James became a donor after undergoing surgery at the age of 14. Actually, James had a chest operation at this age. For this, 13 units of blood were transfused to him. At that time, his life was saved only through the blood of others. This was the time when James resolved that he would donate blood when he grows up. 4 years later, i.e., at the age of 18, he donated blood for the first time.

In 2005, James made the record for donating the most blood

He started donating blood in 1954 at the age of 18 and continued to donate blood every two weeks till the age of 81. In the year 2005, James made the record for donating the most blood, which was broken 17 years later in 2022. This record of James was broken by an American man. James always used to say that he feels proud of saving the lives of so many children.

Antibodies are used to make medicines for pregnant mothers

The antibodies present in Harrison’s blood are used to make medicines for pregnant mothers. Anti-D vaccines protect unborn babies from a fatal disorder called hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). James’ daughter and grandchildren received serum made from his blood. To date, scientists have not fully understood why James’ blood contained such rare antibodies.
