Uttarakhand: The UCC has become strict on marriages performed under a false identity; such marriages will now be declared invalid and legal proceedings will be initiated

Uttarakhand is set to crack down on marriages conducted under false identities. Under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), if a person marries while concealing their identity, the marriage will be declared invalid. Furthermore, legal proceedings will be initiated against the parties involved in such cases.
Cabinet Approves Amendments to the UCC
Importantly, the UCC did not initially include such a provision when it was implemented. Now, the Dhami government has decided to add this as a major amendment. The cabinet meeting approved the amendments to the UCC, which include this provision along with several other changes.
Additional Secretary Level Officers Made Eligible
The administrative structure has also been modified under the amendments. Previously, only a Secretary-level officer could become the Registrar General, but now Additional Secretary-level officers have also been made eligible for this post. This means that Additional Secretary-level officers will now be able to assume the responsibility of Registrar General. Sub-registrars have also been given significant relief.
Government to Bring Ordinance to Implement New Amendments
It is worth noting that the Uniform Civil Code was implemented in Uttarakhand on January 27, 2025. Now, the government is preparing to bring an ordinance to implement these new amendments, which will be presented in the upcoming assembly session. The government believes that these changes will make the UCC more effective and prevent the misuse of the law.
