After all, why are 2000 rupee notes not coming out of the ATM? wouldn’t you like to know?
Remember when was the last time you took out a Rs 2000 note from an ATM? Most people would say that the pink notes of Rs 2000 have become extinct now. For a few days after demonetisation, these notes were visible to everyone, but suddenly they disappeared. Now when a question was asked to the government in the parliament whether RBI has banned banks from giving 2000 rupee notes through ATMs? So the government has replied denying this.
Finance Minister replied
In fact, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that no such order has been given to the banks. In the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, MP Santosh Kumar asked the question to the Finance Minister whether RBI has banned banks from dispensing Rs 2000 notes through ATMs? So giving a written answer to this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that RBI has not given any such order to the banks. He said that even the Reserve Bank of India has not given any order to the banks to fill 2000 rupee notes in ATMs. The Finance Minister further says that keeping in mind the past usage, needs of people and seasonal trends, banks themselves decide on the amount and denomination to be kept in ATMs.
Since when was the printing banned?
The Finance Minister was asked that since when has the RBI banned the printing of Rs 2000 denomination notes? So the Finance Minister said that according to the annual report of RBI, since the year 2019-20, there has been no demand for the supply of banknotes of denomination of Rs 2000. At the same time, the government had told in 2021 also that since 2018-19, no fresh orders have been given for the printing of Rs 2,000 notes, hence there is a shortage of Rs 2,000 notes.
Money deposited as black money?
The central government was also asked that after demonetisation Rs 9.21 lakh crore of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes are not in circulation, have they turned into black money? On this question, the Finance Minister said that no such data is available. He said that by the end of 2017, another 9.512 lakh crore notes were in circulation, which has crossed 27.057 lakh crore by March 2022.
